MASSEY MILL POND
Masseys Mill Pond 30.4 acres The bass population of this pond has improved since it was acquired by the Division in 1996. About 50 bass were collected per hour of electrofishing in 2008; the majority of the fish were legal size (12 inches). An occasional fish over 5 pounds has also been taken. Bass growth has improved as the food supply has increased. Golden shiner were abundant and provide an excellent forage for the bass. Bluegill were the most abundant panfish and the average size has increased. About one in four is over six inches. Black crappie numbers were moderate. American eel, common carp, and gizzard shad were also present. Occasional white perch were observed, usually quite large (10 inches). VEGETATION Spatterdock beds covered much of the upper part of the pond, but are much less abundant in the lower half. Some duckweed floated over the surface with the wind, but has not affected fishing. Occasionally a planktonic algae bloom gives a greenish color to the water. The many deadfalls are a good place to target when fishing. SPECIAL CONDITION This pond does not have a boat ramp, but small boats and canoes often launch from the side of the road on County Rd 148 (Masseys Millpond Rd). However the drop-off is close to shore so some care must be taken during launching and loading. Shore anglers often fish along the road frontage both on Brenford Rd and Masseys Millpond Rd. |
