Haven Lake

Haven Lake
82.5 acres

Although the abundance of largemouth bass has declined here in recent years, the proportion of larger fish has increased. Nearly one-fourth of the fishable size bass (8 inches or above) were larger than 15 inches. Growth was above average with legal length being reached by age 3. Average weights were a little low but were likely impacted by the heavy coverage of hydrilla making it more difficult to catch forage fish.
A wide size range of bluegill − from 4 to 9 inches − was found and average weights were good. Black crappie were also present and some larger individuals (over 10 inches) were available. A wide variety of panfish occurs at Haven Lake with bluegill, black crappie, yellow perch, white perch, pumpkinseed sunfish, and a few redear sunfish (first collected here in 2006). American eel, common carp, and creek chubsucker were common throughout the pond with lesser numbers of golden shiner, brown bullhead, yellow bullhead, gizzard shad, and chain pickerel.

VEGETATION

Floating mats of the filamentous alga, Lyngbya, were present along the shoreline and around the island. This algal species required treatment by algaecide in July and was collected using the weed harvester by late summer. Another filamentous species was also often present within beds of hydrilla. The rooted species hydrilla which had been extremely abundant here in recent years appears to have become less common. It is dense in the upper end of the pond, but becomes sparse heading toward the dam.
Emergent vegetation is lacking along much of the shoreline as residential lawns grow to the water’s edge in many areas.

SPECIAL CONDITION

Bank fishing is limited to the boat access area due to the high proportion of shoreline that is privately owned.

Haven lake is a fairly large pond here in Delaware. Haven has some pretty nice largemouth bass fishing. Lots of open deeper water for those who like crankbait fishing. Plenty of shore line for them guys who jig, senko, or topwater fish. Beware on Sundays as there are a lot of fishing tournaments held here.
