GRIFFITHS LAKE

Griffith Lake
32.2 acres
Milford
An unexpected partial drawdown occurred in 2006 when a leak developed under the water control structure. A number of fish were rescued and transported to Blairs Pond, immediately upstream. The repairs did not require a full drawdown and most of the fish were able to survive in the large pool left in the pond. Following repairs and refilling of the pond, a number of fish were collected from Blairs Pond and returned to Griffith Lake and juvenile bass were also stocked.
Bass numbers have improved with the dominant size class of fish being 8 to 13 inches. However, the proportion of bass over 15 inches has also increased. A population estimate was conducted in spring 2010 with a calculated number of about 310 bass over 6 inches. This is comparable to historical estimates.
Bluegill and black crappie numbers have increased substantially. Many bluegill were over 6 inches and weights were excellent. Yellow perch have been collected from the pond as well as a few large white perch. American eel, creek chubsucker, golden shiner, and chain pickerel were also present. Common carp occur but in very low numbers.
In March 2009, Eastern Shore Bassmasters installed a number of brush piles in the lake to improve fish habitat. Several are marked by stars on the map and at the pond by red-topped poles, but GPS coordinates are: N38 54.600 X W75 28.033; N38 54.667 X W 75 27.933; and N38 54.683 X W 75 27.917.

VEGETATION
An herbicide treatment in spring 2010 caused a major decline in the hydrilla, but by late summer, coverage of this non-native plant was extensive in the upper third of the pond. Floating mats of algae also remain in the upper third of the pond where the depth is shallowest.

SPECIAL CONDITION
The boat ramp at this pond was improved during the 2006 repair of the water control structure. The ramp was widened and the floating dock and shoreline bulkhead renovated. The parking lot is relatively small, limited to 4 vehicles with trailers at most.
